HOW TO ASK FOR THE $ALE

Have you ever played a gig then stood around wondering and waiting to see how much you are going to get paid? If even get paid at all? Have you ever left a gig swearing that that was the last free gig you’re ever going to play, but it wasn’t? Why? Well, because the truth is, we love to play music. We love it so much that we actually would, and often do, play for free. But this is how slowly but surely, one-by-one, musicians die. They decide to focus on their real job and play just for fun. Eventually, they give it up altogether.
Everyone loves sales, right? Well, if you’re reading this post, I'm going to guess that it hasn’t been your strong suit. That is about to change. It’s all in your mind. It has more to do with just having the confidence to ask for the sale then what you’re selling. Now, don’t get me wrong. Of course it matters what you’re selling. But again, if you have the most amazing band or product or show or anything for that matter, and you can’t ask for the sale, guess who’s going to buy it? No one.

Over time I have developed and grown my skills in just asking for what I want, need, and deserve. You would be surprised at how easy it actually is once you get past the initial fear. Furthermore, it is amazing how often people say YES! When it came to asking for money due for my service of playing or teaching music I used to be prideful, and yet, what I thought was humble at the same time. Well not anymore! Maybe it happened when I reached the ripe age of thirty and was sick of being BROKE!

I learned quickly no one was just going to just offer me money because I was “polite enough to wait my turn” so to speak. So, I flipped way over to the other side, now I ask for everything that I want. Sometimes the things I ask for even sound insane (even to me) as they come out of my mouth; but crazy enough, I almost always get what I ask for. The times I have been rejected are usually a blessing in disguise, and so they barely bruise my ego at all. The truth is, that...
1) Most people do have a giving nature, and want to help or compensate you justly
2) Sometimes people don't know what they should pay you until you tell them
3) If they are trying to be greedy or shady and not pay you, that's even more reason to give them the finger and demand your money
4) Ask, and Ye’ shall receive!

If you have enough confidence in what you’re asking, and use the right tone, people will assume it is the right thing to do. They're subconscious will pick up on the pattern of doing what you are powerfully, carefully “suggesting”. The power of suggestion is very powerful and is worth really studying deeply.

Allow people along with the universe to compensate you justly. Even more, demand it. There is no pride or reward in shrinking. This being said, there’s no pride or reward in greed or self- indulgence either. The sky's the limit, but be realistic and fair about what you’re asking for. Always over deliver, take pride in your playing, work ethic, and your self. You can have any amount you want but you need to be willing to deliver an equally valuable product or service.

One of the most common questions drummers have when first starting to quote a price is: How much should I charge? Well, that is entirely up to you. However, don’t pull a number out of your stick bag. One of the most important steps in asking for a sale is itemizing. Make a list of exactly what they are paying for. Figure out how much your time is worth to you and go from there. Even though a gig may be one to two hours, how many hours did you put in for rehearsal, in equipment, in practice space, in gas, paying other musicians, marketing etc.?

Now, you can’t list all of these things and have them pay for them. That’s part of being a drummer. However, it makes what you do worth more. Think about it. When you buy a pair of sticks, it’s seven to $7 to $12. Are the sticks worth that? Do they cost that much to make? No. What goes into the price is the equipment to make them, rent for the place where they’re made, transporting them to the store they’re sold in, the marketing, and the salary of the employees selling them. This is why you should list all of your expenses and etc.
Make sure you are more than happy to explain to the client why the price is what it is. Are you paying the band? Are there travel expenses, rehearsal? These are okay to list; your truck payment is not. Another very common mistake is discounting yourself right after you quote your price.

I learned this from my friend and mentor Ed Rush. As he was explaining not to do this, I suddenly realized that I did it all too often. They would ask how much and I would state the price. Then before they said anything, I discounted my price substantially. Don’t make this mistake. State your price and then shut-up. Stay silent until they agree or object. If they agree, congratulations! Don’t smile so big that they may think that you pulled one over on them.

If they object, negotiate. Practice quoting big prices with a straight face to friends, family, or in the mirror. Pick wisely who you share with. People get fearful of others success. If you’re not in a safe environment people can knock you down or discourage you in a second, sometimes without even meaning to.

Sales is a huge subject that we can't fully cover here, but this should at least get you in the right mindset to Ask For The Sale, and get paid for your talents and services. Sales is another skill just like playing drums that takes practice and persistence. It will be on e of the most valuable skill sets you can develop, and obviously the most rewarding.

Sales and money are not dirty words, that is first big block that most people need to overcome, fro there it's all downhill. Talk to other drummers for price ideas. This will also help boost your confidence knowing that other drummers really do charge this much for doing what they love.

<![CDATA[POP-POW]]>Wed, 03 Jan 2018 23:59:43 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/pop-pow

POWER OF PERSISTENCE - POWER OF WILL

Will power. How many of us have it? Not many people out there exercise it at all. The power of will combined with desire make an irresistible pair to the powerhouse that is Infinite Intelligence. Will power mixed with persistence to accomplish the object of your desire is the best formula to ensure success. Often people that are persistent and have a strong will are looked down upon and misunderstood or hated on. This is because they are incredibly powerful. They produce results. They get what they want, and that is threatening to many people.
The majority of people throw in the towel at the first sign of opposition. A few carry on despite all misfortune or challenge until they attain their goal. These are the Niel Pearts, Travis Barkers, Jon Blackwells, and Henry Fords of the world. These are people that continued on the path to their desires no matter what.
Persistence is a state of mind that can be cultivated.

Many drummers with talent beyond the average drummer never succeed at having the drumming career they desire because they lack the persistence. As talented as I have become through my hard work, there are many whose talents far exceed mine and that hate and talk ish on my success. However there is one major contributing factor that I possess that they didn't. Persistence. I never gave up on my desires, and here I am today--able to create a life of abundance through my creativity and drumming simply because I never gave up, no matter what. And trust me... I had some great reasons to quit, just like everyone else.

If you can continue through the “beatings” of the ups and downs, the trials and tribulations, and keep on, you will be properly rewarded. You will be handsomely compensated, and you will know true pride and joy. Anything worth celebrating usually does not come easy. When you can find opportunity in every adversity, you will have success. Every failure brings with it the seed of an equivalent advantage. This has proven to be true in my life over and over, because I find proof to support it. Where most people find reason to quit or cop out, I take it as one step closer to my goal. One less obstacle to face, and one more experience I can share to help someone else on their journey. Of course this was something I had to practice. It was not just naturally how I was. To develop the mindset of optimism took persistence in it of itself, but it is well worth the time and effort.

Defeat is temporary. Change it into victory through persistence. Remember that all the fills and beats you learned probably seemed impossible at one point, but with desire and faith and persistence you were able to not only learn them, but also master them. They probably even seem like something to laugh at for bringing such a challenge, but in the beginning seemed impossible. Remember this when facing new goals. If they weren't challenging, what real reward would they hold?

Some of the prerequisites of building a persistent state of mind are:
 • Having a definiteness of purpose by knowing what you want backed with a strong motive.
 • Desire makes persistence easier because there is a “reason” why you are doing what you are doing.
 • Self-reliance and belief in your ability to carry out your plan. You can further develop this trait and build confidence through the power of auto-suggestion outlined previously as well as in the steps that will follow.
 • Definiteness of plans--organized plans, even if incomplete to start will encourage follow through.
 • Confidence in your mission will get you through tough times that will test your commitment.
 • Making a commitment will make it harder to quit because the added threat of self-guilt.
 • Support from trusted and like-minded people in your Mastermind group or otherwise.
 • Will power--the habit of concentrating your thoughts on the plans for attainment of your definite purpose.
 • Consistency or “habit” results in persistence. What you feed your mind will become part of your daily experience as it leads to the positive or negative outcomes that follow.
Self-confidence is another piece of the puzzle that aids in persistence. Without self-confidence, we don't feel worthy or optimistic about accomplishing our goals. We can't be leaders, or make decisions. We can't live with excitement and enthusiasm. A guide to building and developing self-confidence through the power of auto-suggestion is listed below. Practice this like the other exercises. In order to really make progress and lasting change, you must invest time to developing these skills, qualities, and formulas. Like the other steps provided to change desire to its monetary equivalent, this process must be given daily use to actually develop self-confidence where it is lacking. In my opinion, there can be better use of time, seeing as how self- confidence affects every single aspect of our lives.

Investing the time to repeat these affirmations aloud with enthusiasm daily will reward you ten-fold!
 1. I know I have the ability to achieve the object of my desires. I have full faith in the attainment of my Definite purpose in life. I demand myself to take continued action, and practice persistence until I accomplish my mission.
 2. I am honest and just in my desires, therefore they can be backed by self-confidence, and built to last and endure any challenges or setbacks.
 3. My endeavors benefit others as they benefit me, I will succeed by attracting forces that I wish to use, and like-minded people to co-create and collaborate with.
 4. I have written down my exact demands and desires for life, and have committed to their obtainment with complete persistence backed by self-confidence.
You can use these, and make up your own that specifically address your goals. These really work, and are an important part of staying focussed and driven. To join other like minded drummers and stay motivated join the Drum And Grow Rich Facebook group here.

<![CDATA[The Most Powerful Group In The World!]]>Wed, 03 Jan 2018 23:34:16 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/the-most-powerful-group-in-the-world

THE MASTERMIND GROUP

Power is necessary to take action on plans. In order to obtain and retain money, power is needed. Power may be defined as organized and intelligently directed knowledge. When two or more people harmoniously work toward a definite accomplishment in an organized fashion, a great power is produced with which great desires and ample riches are achieved. Gaining knowledge by our own resources alone is far less effective than utilizing multiple sources. If we hope to have larger than life results, we must to employ the power of the Mastermind group
Knowledge can be acquired by a variety of different sources. We gain knowledge through our own experience, from stories or documents of other's experiences, conducting experiments or reviewing research done by us or others, and by using our imagination to connect with a higher source outside of ourselves. Knowledge can be converted into power by organizing it into definite plans, and taking action to move towards those plans. Power is essential in obtaining your desires; and in manifesting the successful accumulation of riches in your life.

What is the Mastermind group? It is a group of two or more people that work together in a spirit of harmony to share knowledge and effort in order to accomplish their dreams, desires and missions. No power compares to the power of a well-organized, well-selected Mastermind. Have you ever noticed how certain musicians or actors always seem to be spotted together or working on projects together even if they aren't in a band together? A few examples: Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, and Timbaland. James Franco, Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill and the other guys in the movie “This Is the End”. Travis Barker, Yelawolf, Tim Armstrong. Eminem and Dr. Dre; the list goes on. Look back at the “Rat Pack”. This is not something that has been told to me or “confirmed”, just my own observations. Again the bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Wu-Tang Clan that have been around forever are definitely on to something. These are all people that realize and utilize the POWER of a group of like-minded people harmoniously coming together to coordinate their knowledge and attain a definite purpose; resulting in massive amounts of success and money.

Often to find a proper Mastermind group that will really help skyrocket your success, you will have to make a financial investment. These days many of us are working on something that is more of a solo project in essence, but still need help in obtaining certain energy, plans, and accountability. This is a power that can only come from a group of powerful people. Your Mastermind group can be made up of people that each have their own mission and desires. Each member takes turns helping focus attention on the needs of each group member for a decided amount of time so as to come up with needed solutions. Are you ready to create a Mastermind group of your own?

This is something you can create with a band, a company, your “crew” or whoever you work with, and you can all participate for free, or the most qualified person can run it and charge a fee. There is an advantage to paying for your Mastermind group. Actually a few. First of all, you will always get more out of something you have financially invested in. The reasons for this I feel are fairly obvious. Second, if you are part of a Mastermind group that charges membership fees, it is probably well organized, which means it will have an experienced leader running the format and that makes it ten times more effective. There will be more accountability as an income is relied upon and used to be more consistent.

Next let's take a look at the other characteristic of the Mastermind. The “abstract” side of this powerful group. For some this will be difficult and maybe even impossible to comprehend. It may seem unbelievable or silly. But just look at all the greatest accomplishments throughout history and in the present day, they can easily be traced back and credited to the power of the Mastermind. I myself have proof that it works. I saw enormous success after becoming and continuing to be a part of a carefully selected Mastermind group. It keeps me accountable, and it gives me access to the storage of power otherwise not accessible. Back to the point, how does it work? “No two minds ever come together without, thereby, creating a third invisible, intangible force which may be likened to a third mind” -N.H.

You are who you hang out with. This is another advantage of a proper Mastermind group. You will start to think differently. You will think in ways that will produce big financial results. You will be positively influenced by people that are bettering their lives, and have the right mindset to accomplish whatever is desired. You will pick up higher education by auditory means and osmosis. You will develop success habits, and feel motivated to accomplish more, in less time.

Once you make this a priority be sure to pay attention; you will rapidly attract your Mastermind group. The ether responds to this type of energy with ultimate efficiency. Another option I still use, even though I have a real live group I am part of, is an “imaginary” Mastermind. This may sound even stranger, but it works! I believe it works for a number of reasons. One, because it gets you to dedicate time to focusing on exactly what you want, and what kind of partnerships you desire. Two, because I feel that successful people are very in tune psychically, and in some way reachable when we send out positive thought vibrations into the ether. Three, I firmly believe in the Law of Attraction when followed by action. I have personally had success with this process. It is fun, and effective. It is also cool because it gives you access to people you may otherwise not have access to.

You can utilize this incredibly powerful tool. For a more in depth look at The Mastermind group, get your copy of the full D&G$ book here

<![CDATA[OVERCOMING FEAR & HATERS]]>Wed, 03 Jan 2018 22:53:54 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/overcoming-fear-hatersHOW TO DEAL WITH CRITICISM
& TURN IT INTO FUEL
Mind control is the result of self-discipline and habit. You either control your mind, or it controls you. It's black and white. The most practical way of controlling the mind is keeping it busy with a definite purpose backed by a definite plan. If you look at any high achiever in history or present day, and look closely, you will find they exercise this principle of control over their own mind.
When we are unsure or indecisive, we are led to fear. This in turn leads to doubt. These undetected and uncontrolled negative influences can come in slowly and grow like a virus in every aspect of our lives. I once heard the clever quote, “No man can make progress when wavering between two opposites”. I lost who this insightful quote is from, but it is so true and important. Faith and fear cannot coexist harmoniously. If indecision is present, one will not pick a direction and move toward it. You will be stuck in limbo, back and forth, never moving in a solid direction. This makes progress impossible.

I want to talk about the two main fears that I see stand in the way and bully people most. I felt it necessary to include it to help shine light on why most people are not successful and even many are broke. These two fears are responsible for why most people never even try to follow their true passion in life. They are why most people play it safe in career and never fully, persistently pursue their life's true purpose in music and drumming, or anything else for that matter. It is easy to push them aside and claim they don't apply to you, however this only hurts you. It is worthwhile to attempt to see either of these fears may lie hidden or obvious in your conscious or subconscious mind. Shining light on the presence of either or both of these will be an essential step in your success.
1) The fear of poverty
2) The fear of criticism

Let's talk about the fear of poverty. Poverty and riches cannot coexist. They are two roads leading opposite directions. This being said you must choose to accept one or the other, and never turn back. It goes back to the wavering quote, “you cannot progress unless you choose a path”. Just choosing is not enough, but it is the first essential step. We must refuse any circumstances, thoughts, people, or patterns that lead to poverty in order to obtain riches. It is the starting point that leads to riches. In essence it is desire, which we have been talking about in previous chapters, and will now further discuss the practical application.

The fear of poverty is the most destructive fear. It is the most difficult to master. Acceptance is the key. Once we can shine the light of truth on this matter of fear (which is all in our mind) we can overcome it. But not until we can admit it is there. Throughout history, we have been measured in worth by our financial success. Regardless of the method of obtaining riches, those who have are often worshiped and envied. On the other hand, people lacking in money are left with less respect, for themselves and from society. They have less choices and are often thrown into a downward spiral until eventually identifying and becoming proud to be a “broke” victim of struggling musician syndrome. Poverty brings suffering of many different forms, hence the paralyzing fear that is hiding behind every choice, possible opportunity, chance, and investment.

To combat the fear of poverty engage in practices to stay in an abundance mind set. Hang with others that are optimistic and taking action towards reaching their goals. Stay focussed on what you can do each day, each moment to move closer to what you want. Study other successful people, and join a community of hustlers like the D&G$ family.

Next is the fear of criticism. Or the fear of "haters". This is another fear worth taking a deeper look into, as it is responsible for most of the failure present, and more so responsible for people quitting before even trying. The fear of being criticized, or "hated on" is a paralyzing fear for many drummers and artists. Being in a creative field such as drumming or music, comes with the territory of being vulnerable in a sense. We put our hard work and ideas out there to be judged. Springing from a desire to share, inspire, entertain comes with the possibility of people criticizing and talking shit on our hard work.

Criticism is petty and trivial. It comes from fear itself. Most people don't inherently have the confidence or courage to go against the grain. Most people are always trying to "fit in" and go with the what's socially fed to us as the norm as to avoid criticism. Not often will you find a person with the courage to openly go against the grain and state different beliefs or ideas from the surrounding society. I'm guessing however, as you are reading this book, you are not "the norm". I'm guessing that you do not worry about going with the flow of least resistance nor criticize those that don't.

There will always be haters. The way I like to look at them is like a pesky fly. It's not impossible to catch and kill, but it is an easy way to get distracted, and make a mess. I look at haters as a sign of success. The more they lash out and try to discourage you, the more progress you make and bigger threat you are. If you weren't doing something great, people wouldn't have a strong emotion evoked that they felt they had to express through criticism.

Once we identify and eliminate these fears with awareness and mindfulness, we can express ourselves fully, without reservation, and become creative powerhouses that can openly, honestly share our talents, and get paid thousands to millions of dollars to do so. You also must remember that hating on others holds you back, and keeps you in an energy of lack. If you notice yourself or others starting to criticize or hate, do everyone a favor and change direction to appreciation. If you can't appreciate, at least keep negative comments to yourself as they only turn successful positive people off and blow potential gigs and opportunities you may otherwise get.

Seek company of those that encourage you to think and act for yourself. Avoid "complainers" like the plague. Keep aware to all influences that are around, subtle and obvious. The idle mind is the property of who or whatever comes around. In other words, always be aware and in control of what influences surround you. Stay focused on creative, positive, people and influences, and you will attract just that. You will create habits of productivity, creation, collaborations, growing, and prosperity. Avoid advice from others. Especially unsolicited advice usually from those that are unhappy, unsuccessful, and unhealthy.

You have absolute control of your own thoughts if you choose. This is significant and inspiring. If you fail to control your own mind, you surely will control nothing else. "Anything the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve" Napoleon Hill.

Haters Goin Hate, And Winners Goin Win! Be a Winner and keep your eye on the prize.

<![CDATA[The 3-Ds of a Successful Drumming Career]]>Wed, 03 Jan 2018 22:33:19 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/the-3-ds-of-a-successful-drumming-careerPicture
 DESIRE – DECIDE – DESIGN
DESIRE
I call them the 3 Ds of drumming success. First you must Desire with emotion and enthusiasm the outcome you most want from your drumming career. What do you want to do on a daily basis? Who do you want to make music with and where? How much financial freedom are you willing to accept and receive?

These are all important questions to ponder when beginning the practice of desire. As a self proclaimed stoic, I am well aware of the potential dangers of desire. The possible attachment and let down that comes when expectations are not met. This is something to be conscious of, but not feared. We are material human beings for now, so it is appropriate to desire earthly things and a level of material security, even abundance. It is in my opinion also our responsibility.

When you become financially independent, you not only become less of a burden to society, friends, and family, but you also become a channel for creating a better life for others. Dream and desire BIG! There is enough for everyone. The service of music you provide is worthy of reward. Drums free people and sooth the soul. You need to get paid and have a good life to be able to continue to share your gift.

DECIDE

Making a solid and committed decision is the next step in creating success in any endeavor. Once you decide, and remove doubt, you can really start the energy ball rolling. You will be hyper focused on your mission, and opportunities that support you will come seemingly out of nowhere. The universe will conspire to help you. This doesn’t mean challenges won’t arise, it means that you will rise above them and continue on until you achieve the Desired results.

You may feel tested at times, but each time you persevere through, you will be a giant leap closer to your goal. Allow for things to happen and flow differently than you planned, but always keep your destination in the fore front of your mind. Put this on your vision board, in your wallet, tattooed on your body, and anywhere you will be reminded to do something everyday to work towards your Desire.

DESIGN

This is the fun, and for many challenging part. You need to be able to go with the flow, but if there is too much ambiguity, you will get lost and attract outcomes that don’t match your true desire. Designing your plan for your drumming career can be a simple list of bullet points outlining different ways you wish to make money playing drums, specific amounts you will earn for each activity, and ways you will attract these gigs. Or you can write out a story that describes your Dream Day. (There is an entire Facebook group dedicated to designing your Dream Day, follow D&G$ to become a member of the group).

Writing out your Dream Day makes it easy to really feel and imagine what your life can be like when you create the drum gig that meets your needs, ambitions, and creative demands. I was amazed at how well this worked as soon as I got clear and honest with my true desires. Be detailed in what service you will provide, what you will get in return, and what you will feel like as you become the drummer you envision. Who is with you? What are you playing? Where are you playing? Why are you playing? How much money are you making and what are some ways you invest and use your money?

This is more than enough information to start you on the path to a successful and fulfilling drum career. We go into way more depth in the Drum And Grow Rich book and online academy which you can find here www.DrumAndGrowRich.com

<![CDATA[6 REAL LIFE WAYS YOU CAN MAK MONEY PLAYING DRUMS TODAY!]]>Wed, 25 Oct 2017 03:40:27 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/6-real-life-ways-you-can-mak-money-playing-drums-today
What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend/boyfriend? Homeless! OUCH!! Funny but all too often true.
This is not just a common stereotype from the general public that drummers are known as “broke musicians,” but one I often hear drummers harshly labeling themselves as. I know because I used to do it myself — and in fact, I used to be one myself!
Not anymore, though! I made a decision that I would no longer settle for playing for free drinks or gas money. I made it my mission to find all the ways I could to get paid for playing the drums. I am fully self-supported through the money I make playing, teaching, and writing about drums, and I even wrote a book that became a #1 Best Seller called “Drum and Grow Rich” — so I guess you could say I am qualified to give you some helpful pointers on the subject.

Here are 6 ways, other than landing the dream gig and touring the world, to make money playing the drums.

Here are six ways, other than landing the dream gig and touring the world, to make money playing the drums.
1) TeachingYou may think that teachers don’t make much money, but I assure you that you can make great money from teaching the drums. Depending on your skill level, experience, and confidence, you can make anywhere from $30-$200 an hour — and even more if you’ve played with big bands or have the right clientele. Most teachers bring in about $60 per hour, which means even working part-time you will make between $2,400 and $4,000 while still having time to play gigs at night.
2) Online LessonsSimilar to above, if you have the right experience, creating online lessons is another great option. You can film once, then create passive income from them over and over. This is becoming a very popular avenue for many fields, and is widely accepted as a reliable source of education. There are a lot of other drummers doing this, but don’t let that stop you. You have something unique that no one else has, and there are plenty of students for anyone who wants to teach.
3) Corporate Gigs, Weddings, and Parties, Oh MY!This is where the big money is at, and you would be surprised how easy they are to get. As with any gig or drumming job, make sure that you are offering something of quality. You need to take pride in order to make the big bucks. The more songs you know, and the tighter your band is, the more gigs and referrals you will get, and the more you can charge. I have booked and played gigs that I charged more than $1,000 for that lasted less than two hours. Not bad! I have also been hired for other gigs where all I had to do was show up and know the songs, and I got paid $200 for an hour.
4) Musicals, Cirque Du Soliel, and ShowsAh, who doesn’t love the theater? Playing for musicals and shows is a great way to make money and have a more steady lifestyle. These types of gigs almost always require above-average reading skills, but that is no need to worry. The way I see it, even a drummer at a beginner level of reading can grow his or her skills to above average (musical or show-ready) in less than a year if there is a serious effort to do so. Learning to read music efficiently will be one of the greatest investments of your time that you can possibly make. Even gigs like playing for Justin Timberlake or Lady Gaga require reading skills.
The best way to steadily improve is to read at least one piece of music each day. Even if you cannot practice or play it, just mentally reading through the form will dramatically improve your reading skills. Practicing hits, time changes, and odd meter is also imperative for these types of gigs.
5) WritingOk, so this one is not directly playing the drums, but it takes experience and knowledge of playing them to be able to write about them. Writing about drums has allowed me to grow my reach to drummers all over the world and educate in new ways I never thought possible. You can make great money from writing articles, books, and blogs about drumming, but the bigger picture to see is that writing makes you an expert. I have been fortunate enough to have success from writing about drums and it has opened doors that I never imagined. Plus, you can do it when you want, where you want, and how you want, all while helping people and tapping into another aspect of your creativity.
6) Playing Local ShowsHere is the catch with this one: If you are going to make any real money playing local shows or even touring on a small to medium level, you need to have a back end. In other words, you need to have stuff to sell. You can play shows and get paid $20-$75 on average, but this can be a lot of hard work for little pay-off. The key is to have CDs or T-shirts to sell to keep fans engaged and coming back for more. Now, you may be thinking this sounds shady or like it isn’t “about the music,” but if you don’t make money then you can’t keep making music. It is your responsibility to figure out how to make as much money as possible from each and every fan (ethically of course).
This goes back to giving value. Ask yourself and your band, how can we give our fans the most value? If this is genuinely your focus, you will come up with all sorts of ways to give them more, and make great money for doing it.

These are just six ways out of thousands to make money playing the drums. I hope these are helpful and inspire you to use your gift as more than just a hobby. Don’t give up! I was ready to give up completely on making a living from playing the drums, even though it was my dream, until I made a decision to keep on. It wasn’t always easy, but as soon as I committed to making it happen, everything changed. You can do it too, you just have to believe, be creative, and be committed.

<![CDATA[THE REAL SECRET TO IMPROVING YOUR BAND'S SOUND... IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK!]]>Wed, 25 Oct 2017 03:33:25 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/the-real-secret-to-improving-your-bands-sound-its-not-what-you-think
Do you want your band to sound even better? (Who doesn’t?!) Here I will share my secret for improving the group’s sound as well as your individual musical skills…
Do you think a metronome is just a personal preference for some musicians? Are you one of those musicians who KNOWS your time is perfect and unmatched? Well I’ve got news for you — it probably isn’t as spot-on as you think.
Most fights in bands are due to someone being off-time, and unable to accept that it is them. The truth is that most people honestly believe they are on time. As a drummer, I learned a long time ago the only way to know for sure how good your timing really is, is to use a metronome.

I’m not suggesting that you always play, practice, and perform with your metronome — not all music calls for that. What I am suggesting is that you take your musicianship to a whole other level, and take your power back! There is no greater feeling than knowing 100% where each note, beat, lick, and fill fits in the time and space of the song.
Singer-songwriters and guitar players… I’m calling you out! I challenge you to use a metronome when practicing and learning songs. I have played with so many amazingly talented musicians, guitar-playing singer-songwriters who performed and sounded fantastic alone, but when it came to a band setting, they were like complete beginners. Don’t let this be you.
Here are some ideas on how to get comfortable with the metronome as you’re singing or playing guitar with your band:
1) Listen to your songs against the “click.” This will help you to see where everything really lines up, and how much time you actually have to do whatever you want to do or play.
2) Devote at least 10% of your practice routine to practicing with the metronome. I recommend more like 50-90% but baby steps are fine for people not used to practicing with the metronome.
3) If you’re in a band, have “The Talk.” This will hold everyone equally accountable for doing what they can to improve their personal timing, which will improve the band’s time as a whole. Also having a group practice where the drummer listens to a click is helpful too. It instantly builds trust and competence. (If there is a problem member that can’t admit or see their faults, it may be helpful to have some practices where everyone can hear the click through the speakers, to shine light on what needs extra attention.)
4) Be humble. Learning that your timing sucks can be a hard realization, especially for sensitive musicians. This can bruise the ego and come out as anger. Remember the point is not to be “right” or make someone feel defeated. The point is to improve your band’s sound, as well as individual sound. The metronome is the Truth, and sometimes the Truth hurts.
5) Slow down! The best way to really lock down any song, riff, groove, fill, or solo is to slow way down. Take the tempo down to half or 3/4’s of the original tempo and practice in slow motion, to let your brain and muscles learn exactly where everything fits. Do this until your muscle memory learns the movement of the piece. Then when you speed back up, do it gradually in increments of 5 or 10 bpms until you arrive back at the original tempo. Then push past 10 or 20 bpms so you truly have it mastered. You never know when you will need to play it faster or slower, but with this practice, you will be prepared no matter what the speed.
These are just a few ways to incorporate the metronome as you’re playing guitar, singing, or whatever part you play in your band. I hope this is helpful — and remember, it’s about taking baby steps. This is not something you just want to brush off. Being a master at time will make you a more valuable musician, and more confident in your skills too. It may be tough at first, but anything worth learning is.
Go easy on yourself and/or your band. It is challenging, but I know you can do it!

<![CDATA[THE FIRST STEP IN DRUMMING TO GROW RICH - LEARNING THE DRUMS]]>Wed, 25 Oct 2017 03:27:23 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/the-first-step-in-drumming-to-grow-rich-learning-the-drums
Want to learn to play the drums? Nervous about the first lesson? Read on as San Diego, CA drum teacher Lucas Widdes shares what you can expect from a great first lesson…
Drums are an art form, and like all art forms, there are as many styles and techniques as there are people.
Each and every instructor has his or her own unique way and style of teaching. The key to learning and progressing as rapidly as possible is finding a teacher that you can relate to and understand. A good teacher will be able to quickly identify how you learn best, be it visually, audibly, or kinesthetically. Then he or she should adapt the lessons to your personal learning style.
This being said, there are a few basics that will almost always be included in any first lesson as you learn to play the drums.
GripAny good teacher will take a few minutes to make sure you have a proper grip and technique.
There are three main grips used in drumming:
 1. Matched German Grip (both palms facing down, sticks make a right angle, arms at sides)
 2. Matched French Grip (both hands with stick pinched between first finger and thumb, thumbs facing up, sticks making a right angle)
 3. Traditional Grip (right hand using French and/or German grip, and left hand holding stick like a fork or spoon)
The grip you use is a mix between personal preference and practicality. Some styles of music may call for one grip over another, as will certain playing positions, such as which drum or area of the set you are playing on.
Playing TechniquesThere are many different playing techniques when it comes to the drums. It is good to try out as many as you can, and see which ones work best for you. Depending on your teacher, you will probably focus on just a few to start as you learn to play the drums. Techniques can take a long time to master, but substantial progress can be realized quickly with daily repetition.
Getting to Know the Drum SetNext your teacher will most likely go around the kit and make sure you are familiar with all the different drums and cymbals, including their names, sounds, and uses. You’ll review how to properly use the pedals, along with foot techniques. Again, there are multiple foot techniques, and they can be used in combinations or by themselves depending on the situation.
RudimentsNow you’re ready to start playing! There are 26 essential standard American rudiments as recognized by most drummers and by the Percussive Arts Society. All of them are important and have many uses and applications. Any proper drum instructor will start off with the basic five:
 1. Single Stroke Sticking/Roll Right hand lead = RLRL
 2. Single Stroke Sticking/Roll Left hand lead = LRLR
 3. Double Stroke Roll Right hand lead = RRLL
 4. Double Stroke Roll Left hand lead = LLRR
 5. Paradiddle = RLRR LRLL
These are the most well-known, foundational rudiments. These will be the basis of everything you play, from beginner level to advanced. A good teacher will not pass these by, and will encourage you to practice these everyday. It is important to drill these into your muscle memory.
Moving OnThis will most likely conclude your first lesson. If you are a fast learner you may also get to go over some basic counting and timing exercises. Sometimes I will feel out what my students are more likely to be interested in, and give them their next exercise based on that. I may go into accents, which are volume levels known as dynamics, or I may go right into teaching a basic beat. It all depends on the student.
The most important thing to remember is that it is not about the destination, it is about the journey. Drums are such an amazing instrument, and they have such a huge depth of possibilities that you can spend your entire lifetime studying them, and still not know everything. That is what I love most.
I hope this was helpful, and that you’re no longer nervous about going to your first drum lesson. You can do it! Give yourself a chance and remember that drums are not easy, so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get it right away. It’s all about practice, patience, and progress — not perfection. Enjoy the journey!

<![CDATA[DRUMMING 101 - 6 DRUM TERMS YOU MUST KNOW!]]>Wed, 25 Oct 2017 03:20:01 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/drumming-101-6-drum-terms-you-must-know
Learning to play the drums means new equipment, new skills, and new terminology. Here I'll break down some basic drum terms so you can walk the walk and talk the talk…

Whether you’re new to the drumming world or you’re a seasoned pro, these drum terms are the ABC’s that every drummer should know.

1. Rudiments are the different drum patterns that can be used as drills themselves, or turned into music when applied properly to the drum set or drum kit.
There are several different drum rudiments, however, 40 of them have made the cut as the most important and popular rudiments to learn and use. If you want to learn all 40, Vic Firth has a guide on their website, but for now let’s take a look at some of the most basic rudiments that you will use in your drum lessons.

Before we get started, note that the letters “R” and “L” tell you which drum or hand to play. R = right hand and L = left hand.
The Single Stroke RollThis is the most basic of all the rudiments. This is what you would naturally play if you just picked up the sticks and started playing. The pattern is R, L, R, L.
Lead with your right hand when you play this stroke, and it turns into a roll as the tempo increases.
Once you’ve learned the single stroke roll, try to play the same pattern leading with your left hand: L, R, L, R.
Double Stroke RollNow we get into our double strokes. The right and left hand lead will apply here as well. This is where two strokes will be played on each hand R, R, L, L (right hand lead) or L, L, R, R (left hand lead).
Double stroke rolls are sometimes called “diddles.”
ParadiddleThe paradiddle is one of the most famous and important rudiments to master. It has several variations and can be applied in so many cool ways. The pattern is R, L, R, R, L, R, L, L. The pattern is all eighth notes.
Now that you have a basic overview of the essential rudiments, let’s take a look at some other common drum terms.
2. Drum FillA drum fill, also called a lick or a chop, is a phrase you play to fill in space between sections of a song, or to take you and the band to the next section like the verse, chorus, or bridge.
3. Drum ThroneThe seat that the drummer sits on is often referred to as the throne. Yes, just like royalty, the drummer gets a special seat.
4. Traditional and Matched GripThese terms describe how you hold the drum sticks. In the traditional grip, you hold the left stick like a fork, and the right stick like a wand.
With a matched grip, hold both sticks like a wand with your palms facing down.
5. Groove or BeatThe drum groove or beat, is a rhythmic pattern you play to the music that keeps the time.
6. TempoTempo refers to the time or speed. Sometimes drummers will use a click track or metronome to practice and work on improving their tempo. Some bands and drummers even play live shows with a click track.
The list of drum terms goes on and on, and you will discover a lot more as you continue your drum lessons. If you ever hear a new term that you don’t understand, don’t be afraid to ask someone what it means. You may feel silly at first, but it’s the best way to learn and increase your drum vocabulary.
I hope you enjoyed this and learned a few terms that you can use. Keep on shredding, that means playing drums like crazy!

<![CDATA[SIGHTREADING IN 8 SIMPLE STEPS]]>Wed, 25 Oct 2017 03:08:09 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/sightreading-in-8-simple-steps
As a drummer, you might be faced with sight reading as you practice and audition. Here are my tips for sight reading practice…

There are two types of drummers: those who read music, and ones who don’t. I have met so many talented drummers who have decided they can’t or won’t read music, and never even give themselves a chance to try. Charts and sight reading can be overwhelming, but is a useful skill, and one that is easy if you do it right.
Before we get into the tips, however, consider the mental aspect. If you say you can’t read music, then you can’t. Your mind will instantly close off from the possibility, making it something “out there” and impossible. Make a decision to allow yourself to learn to read, and you will create the proper mental state to do so.
Here are some tricks I use to make sight reading practice a lot easier:
 1. When I receive a chart, the first thing I do is look throughout the whole thing to see how many pages it is and what the tempo or tempos are (any time changes).
 2. I see if the feel or style is notated and if it changes throughout the song — and internalize it before trying to play anything.
 3. I then take a highlighter and get to work. I highlight all the “Road mapping,” codas, DS’s, alternate endings, and anything that tells me where to go next so that my eye can easily see it.
 4. I take a pencil or pen and circle important hits or fills, so I can be prepared for them as I am playing. Also, there will often be changes at the last minute that you will want to notate.
 5. Read through the piece. If you have enough time, visually read throughout the charts. Take all of the repeats, codas, and DS’s exactly as they are, so you’re more comfortable when you go to play it. Even Olympic athletes attribute a big portion of their success to mental practice and visualization.
 6. Catch what you can. You may not be able to play it perfectly, but make sure to get your priorities straight. The three most important elements to playing with a band as the drummer is to mark the form, keep the time/tempo, and set the feel for everyone. If nothing else, at least get these three right, then worry about hits, and fills, and extras.
 7. Remember… you’re not alone. The chart can be a distraction if you let it. Don’t forget to connect with the rest of the band and the audience if it’s that type of situation. This will help make everything flow together better and make the chart easier to absorb because you can hear musical cues from the band and create a synergy effect. If it’s a studio gig, you can still make sight reading easier by looking at the big picture. Play for the sound and the music, and everything will fall into place.
 8. Practice a bit every day. Ever hear of the compound effect? Like any other drumming rudiment, beat, and fill, sight reading is a skill that requires consistent practice. Try to read through as many different charts as you can get your hands on. Don’t worry about perfecting them all — just map them out, follow the form mentally, and try to play through them the best you can. The more you do this, the easier they will get, and eventually you’ll get to a point where there is nothing you haven’t seen, and you are prepared for everything.

<![CDATA[NEW TO DRUMS? - THE BEST 3 WAYS TO LEARN!]]>Wed, 25 Oct 2017 03:04:06 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/new-to-drums-heres-where-to-startDo you want to learn drums, but aren’t sure which route to take? These days we are lucky enough to have many options, but having too many can also be confusing and overwhelming.
Let’s take a closer look at the three main options so you can figure out which one will suit your needs and goals the best. (HINT: You can use more than one)

1) In-person lessons. To me, learning in person from an experienced teacher is essential. There is no better way to quickly and efficiently progress than to have a coach who can identify your strengths and weaknesses, and put you on a path toward your unique goals. There is something magical about the “Sensei and grasshopper” relationship that cannot be fully experienced any other way than in person.
Remember, in-person lessons can be in the comfort and convenience of your own home, or at the teacher’s school or studio. Either way is equally effective, it just comes down to personal preference and resources.

2) Online lessons. There are so many ways to learn online today that not taking advantage of this amazing option will keep you in the dark about what’s going in the big world of drumming. Let’s look at a few ways to learn drums from online sources.
 • Skype. Skype is the next closest thing to the in-person lesson, and can be very convenient, affordable, and effective. Often when a drummer gets a gig to tour and has to leave their students, they will continue Skype lessons so the students can continue to grow, without having to switch instructors or start all over. This option is also popular if you want to study with a teacher who lives far away, or is famous and doesn’t give in-person lessons.
 • YouTube. I love learning from other drummers and seeing what creative ideas they come up with. It is amazing how many people are willing to give away their best secrets for free (usually hoping to obtain you as a student later). There is enough to keep you busy for a lifetime. Even after graduating Musician’s Institute, I continue to learn new fills, songs, and tricks from other drummers on YouTube. You can also learn a lot just watching for entertainment. The best part of YouTube is that drummers can build an online community. It is fun to meet other drummers around the world, and sometimes you can find great gig opportunities, too.
 • Membership sites. Often these are advertised through the free drum lessons on YouTube. These are usually very affordable, and you can repeat a lesson over or rewind if you are having trouble with something.
3) DIY. The do-it-yourself approach to my knowledge is the least effective. There are so many books, videos, and different things to know when drumming that you spend the majority of your time trying to figure out what to learn. When I first started playing the drums, this is the approach I took. I would listen to music and try to figure it out. Later, once I started taking lessons, I learned more in a few months than I was able to figure out in the years of trying on my own.
I hope this helped clear up some questions about the different approaches to learning the drums. Please feel free to comment, like, share, or leave questions below

<![CDATA[The Power Of Asking - How and When to do it, and why it’s imperative to success]]>Wed, 25 Oct 2017 02:48:07 GMThttp://drumandgrowrich.com/blog/the-power-of-asking-how-and-when-to-do-it-and-why-its-imperative-to-successHave you ever played a gig then stood around wondering and waiting to see how much you are going to get paid? Often to end up not getting paid at all? Have you ever left a gig swearing that that was the last free gig you’re ever going to play, but it wasn’t? Why? Well, because the truth is, we love to play music. We love it so much that we actually would play and often do for free. But this is how slowly but surely, one-by-one musicians die. They decide to focus on their real job and play just for fun. Eventually, they give it up altogether.

Over time I have developed and grown my skills in just “asking” for what I want, need, and deserve. You would be surprised at how easy it actually is once you get past the initial fear. Furthermore, it is amazing how often people say YES! I use to be prideful and what I thought was humble at the same time about asking for money due to me. I didn’t know how to go about making sure I got paid for a gig I was going to play, or for teaching music or any other number of drumming opportunities. Well not anymore!
Maybe it happened when I reached the ripe age of thirty and was sick of being BROKE! I learned quickly no one was just going to offer me money because I was polite enough to wait my turn so to speak. Now I flipped way over to the other side, and ask for everything I want. Sometimes it even sounds insane as it comes out of my mouth some of the things I ask for, but crazy enough I almost always get it. The times I have gotten rejected, were usually a blessing in disguise, and barely bruised my ego at all.

If you have enough confidence in what you’re asking, (which comes from being fair and knowing you deserve it) and use the right “tone”, people will know it is the right thing to do. They're subconscious will pick up on the pattern of doing what you are powerfully, carefully “suggesting”. The power of suggestion is very powerful and is worth really studying deeply.

Having a professional price sheet is a great way to show you know what you’re doing, and gives your client more assurance than just verbally spitting out a number. Your price sheet is going to be more for the gigs that you are trying to get as the band manager and that you have to give a bid for, than a hired gun situation that usually is more set based on experience, how much they love you and their budget.

If you are in the field of playing weddings, corporate gigs, high end venues, parties and major events, you will want to have a price sheet. Having a Price sheet in a professional “shock and awe package” will allow you to charge more money, secure a much higher closing rate (get a lot more high paying gigs to hire you), and create a clear understanding of exactly what is included in the price and what isn’t ie: How many hours you will play, what equipment will you bring, are they going to feed you etc.

You can email it to your potential clients, or you can bring on a consultation. When you lay it all out on paper it lets the client really see all the value they are getting, which makes them feel more comfortable writing you a check for $3,000 than you just giving them the price out loud with no explanation of how you came up with the number. For a Free example that you can swipe and use go to www.DrumAndGrowRich.com enter info and put “Price Sheet” in comment area.

You are an important part of economic circulation. Musicians have one of the most important jobs in the world. Not to mention, the most difficult. Mindset is an integral part of success. You have to let go of any ideas or programming that feeds the ego a romantic story of struggle and sacrifice to allow yourself to be a well-paid, respected entrepreneur, businessman or woman and most of all professional musician.

Allow people and the universe to compensate you justly. Even more, demand it. There is no pride or reward in shrinking. This being said, there’s no pride or reward in greed or self-indulgence either. The sky is the limit, but be realistic and fair about what you’re asking for. Always over deliver, take pride in your playing, work ethic, and your self. You can have any amount you want but you need to be willing to deliver an equally valuable product or service.

As he was explaining not to do this, I realized that I did it all too often.

They would ask how much and I would state the price. And then before they said anything, I discounted it substantially. Don’t make this mistake. State your price and then shut-up. Stay silent until they agree or object. If they agree, congratulations! Don’t smile so big that they think you pulled one over on them.

If they object, negotiate. Practice quoting big prices with a straight face to friends, family, or in the mirror. Pick wisely who you share with. People get fearful of others success. Unless in a safe environment, they can knock you down or discourage you in a second without even meaning to you.

In conclusion, sales are an essential piece of the puzzle. Educate yourself. Sales make or break your dream career. Don’t be cheap on your way to success, invest in learning what you can about marketing and sales to further your musical career. Everything is energy including money. If you’re afraid to let it go and circulate, it cannot circulate to you. If you are in fear of lack, you’ll get stuck there.

Take a leap of faith and trust in abundance. Most importantly, practice, practice, practice. You will never feel “ready” or “qualified” to start asking for money you deserve. If you do feel totally comfortable, it's time to raise your prices! You always get a little rush of nerves before quoting your price, but that's our little secret, don't let them know that. Play it cool.

It is every musicians right and responsibility to get paid for the unique, and precious gift that is music that we bring to this world.
